So is it all to do with clever marketing? In many ways, yes. Whilst the jeans of today are far more comfortable and varied than ever before, in times gone buy denim jeans were worn simply for style, rather than anything to do with comfort. Think back to the days when people would have to lie in a bath just to get their jeans on, and suddenly it becomes clear that such items have not always been bought due to practicality, but instead because fashion dictated it.

Yet, the reasons that fashion has hung on to them for so long are slightly more varied than that. Denim tends to look good, be affordable and be extremely sturdy, so whilst clever marketing has played its part, appealing to new generations keen on rebellion at the exact time when they might have otherwise looked into buying other types of clothes, the fact that they are extremely suitable for many different people has helped to ensure that they are not just visually and culturally appealing, but also physically appealing too.

As time has passed, they have become more versatile so they are no longer just about style or durability for work, but also about comfort too, and the range of styles spanning many eras means they will be popular for a long time to come. After all, fashion now picks its style from eras gone by and since jeans have spanned almost all of them, no matter what era we hark back to, jeans will still be here.
