Urban fashion, as with any other fashion, goes through changes to reflect the changing world and the whims and fancies of those who inspire it. But unlike many ways of dressing, urban fashion is heavily political, giving it a strength and sociological aspect that others lack.
Here is a summary of some of the most popular looks that have made up urban wear over the last few decades, and of what it has meant for the streetwear clothing market:
Oversized clothing and jewellery, from bomber jackets to sunglasses and heavy gold jewellery were the cornerstones of the original look, along with sportswear brands; they have always been an integral part of urban wear.
African influences, including blousy trousers, clothing in African nationalist colours of red, black and green and African-inspired items of clothing such as cloth hats are often found, along with hair woven into dreadlocks and Africa chains. This is a reminder of the roots of hip hop and the condition of the African-American individual in American society as well as of the political nature of the hip hop scene, aspects of which are also regularly found in the lyrics of songs and discussed by artists in interviews.
The female urban look would also be made up from oversized clothes. The difference would be that women would add a sports bra, worn underneath but visible. Baseball caps maintained the link with sportswear, while neon colours, polka dots and even the wearing of clothes backwards would be found.
Big-name sportswear brands such as Nike stole a huge chunk of the urban fashion market when they began working with African-American sports names such as Michael Jordon. The relationship between urban fashion, big name brands and sports stars is one that has continued throughout the history of urban fashion.
Most recently, the artist P Diddy has taken urban clothing to a whole new level with the look he terms ‘ghetto fabulous’.
