Many people today would happily state that marriage is nowhere near as important as it used to be. However, the main reason for such an opinion is simply that marriage is not seemed to be so important anymore.
That may sound somewhat paradoxical, throwing up all kinds of chicken and egg scenarios, but in reality such a statement makes perfect sense. As the idea of marriage becomes less important to some, immediately others will feel less pressure to get married. Whilst it may once have been expected and the only accepted way for a couple to have children, as more and more people see it is as a mere life choice as opposed to a necessity, more and more people are therefore thinking that it is not necessary to actually get married.
Yet, if opinion is the only thing dictating whether or not marriage is important, in some ways this actually makes marriage more important than ever. In bygone eras people would have married out of a sense of duty or a sense of expectation, therefore the marriages would have been unlikely to be totally happy ones as the marriage would not have been for the right reasons. However, today, when people get married there is a much better chance that they truly know that they are marrying the person they want to be with.
But if society sees those offerings of diamond engagement rings as unnecessary, what are the benefits of actually going through with marriage. Ultimately, there are many. Firstly, as more and more people are choosing to eschew the conventions of marriage it is easy to spot correlations with certain social problems within society. Marriage offers a great deal of stability, and the act of getting engaged is about far more than just diamonds and a big party.
Married life offers a much more stable environment for children to be brought up in. It also offers a more stable relationship between husband and wife (or same sex partners), ensuring that both parties know that the other one is serious about making the relationship work. Whilst people can enter into marriage fool-heartedly, the majority of people taking such vows will mean every word, and it is far more likely for people to feel comfortable in their relationship should there be the sanctity of marriage bestowed upon them. On top of this, a committed relationship will not only require an emotional investment, but also a financial one too, and marriage helps to ensure that such investments can be fairly shared should a relationship unfortunately end.
Even in death, marriage can be beneficial, ensuring that those who are most entitled to their partner’s belongings get what they deserve.
Ultimately, marriages aren’t just about diamond rings and nice big buffet, although the ceremony itself will undoubtedly serve to strengthen the bond between any couple and help them appreciate just what they have, and how lucky they are.
With marriage, relationships feel focussed and special not just temporary and transient. Marriage is a lifetime commitment and shouldn’t be seen as anything else than a way to prove exactly how special a relationship really is.
